The Story Behind Embrace50

A personal story from Sandip Mittal

Founder of Embrace50

A place for men and women to discover more, share more and enjoy life after 50 together.

It was march 2007, I was trying to arrange a summer trip to Europe for my parents. I needed to find people who would join them. That search became the beginning of the idea behind Embrace50.

I began with the people closest to them. I asked their friends. I spoke to others we knew. Would they like to come along? Would they join my parents on this journey?

No one was ready.

There can be perfectly understandable reasons for saying no to a trip. People have commitments, concerns and their own sense of when the time is right. Yet each conversation left me facing the same unanswered question: who would go with my parents?

When you are trying to do something for people you love, a practical difficulty can feel very personal. Finding companions was one more arrangement to make, but it mattered. I wanted my parents to have people beside them with whom they could feel at ease and share the experience.

It is easy to look at our parents and see the roles they have always played in our lives. We ask about their health, their medicines, whether they have eaten. Those questions matter. So does another one we can forget to ask: what would you still love to do?

For me, arranging that Europe trip meant making room for that question. I kept looking for a way to bring it together.

Finding companions for the first journey

When the people around us were not ready, I reached beyond our familiar circle. I contacted a few people on LinkedIn who were in the same age group as my parents and asked whether they would be interested in joining the trip.

LinkedIn might seem an unlikely place to look for your parents’ travel companions. But behind every professional profile is a person with a life beyond work. A connection made in one setting can become meaningful in another, if someone is willing to begin the conversation.

Through those conversations, I found people willing to join them and arranged that first trip to Europe.

The answer had come from outside the group I had first thought to ask. People who were connected to me professionally were now helping make a personal wish possible. My parents had companions for their journey.

Sometimes, helping someone take a journey begins with helping them find the people to take it with.

That experience is at the heart of Embrace50. It holds a simple possibility: the people with whom we will share a meaningful part of our lives may still be people we have yet to meet.

We often make plans within the circle we already know. When no one in that circle is available, it can be tempting to put the plan away. A place we wanted to visit becomes a conversation we stop bringing up. Something we were looking forward to slips quietly into another year.

Finding a wider circle can change what feels possible. It creates the chance to meet someone who shares an interest, someone who understands your pace, or someone who has also been wondering whom they could go with. Friendship can begin with an ordinary question about a shared plan.

I had started by trying to bring one trip together for my parents. The experience gave me a reason to think about other people facing a similar difficulty. How many plans might move forward if there were an easier way to find willing company?

That question became the seed of Embrace50: a community shaped by the value of companionship and the belief that our lives should continue to hold things we look forward to.

A place to belong after 50

Embrace50 carries that family beginning into a community for women and men aged 50 and above. Travel is part of its purpose, alongside opportunities to make friends, explore interests and feel connected in everyday life.

Turning 50 does not make everyone want the same things. Some people are eager for a busy adventure; others would enjoy an unhurried holiday. Some come with a partner or a friend. Others are taking the first step on their own. A welcoming community makes room for those differences.

For me, that welcome is personal. I think back to the effort of finding companions for my parents and the difference it made when people were willing to join them. That is the feeling I want Embrace50 to make possible for others: having a plan you care about, and people with whom you can share it.

The connection can start with a journey. It can also begin with a conversation about something you have read, an interest you would like to return to, or a place you have always hoped to visit. There is no need to arrive with a remarkable story. Your curiosity is enough to begin.

If you are reading this and thinking of your parents, ask them about something they would enjoy doing. Give the answer the same attention you would give any other part of caring for them. There may be a wish you have heard before, still waiting for a practical way forward.

And if you are reading this for yourself, I hope you will give your own wishes that attention too. You may have spent years fitting plans around other people. Something that matters to you deserves a place in the calendar as well.

I return to that first Europe trip because it keeps the purpose of Embrace50 close and clear. It began with a son making arrangements for his parents, and people willing to say yes.

I wanted my parents to have something to look forward to, and people to share it with. That is the hope I bring to Embrace50.

Wherever you are in life after 50, you are welcome here. I hope you find a reason to make a new plan and someone who is glad you asked them to come along.
